TOPIC: The Tragedy Of Achan.

SCRIPTURE: The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. – Proverbs 11:3

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: What is not yours does not add anything to you; it takes everything from you.

THE MESSAGE:

Positive character preserves and negative character destroys. One vivid example was Achan, who lost his life and his whole family on the platform of covetousness, theft, and lying.

After the fall of Jericho, God instructed the children of Israel that when they entered the city, they were not to touch anything because everything in Jericho was cursed.
But Achan took some things, and Israel became weakened and could not stand before the small nation of Ai in battle. Achan saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, silver, and gold, and coveted them. He took them and hid them in his tent (Joshua 7:21).

As a result, Israel, a nation that had brought down the mighty walls of Jericho could not stand before a small enemy. Joshua lamented before God, asking, O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies! (Joshua 7:8). That is, “We are not meant to be running while the enemy pursues; we are meant to be pursuing while the enemy runs.”

When God revealed the source of the problem, He said, “Israel hath sinned.” He did not say, “One man sinned.” You see, one man’s transgression brought trouble upon the whole nation. Tribe by tribe and family by family, the search continued until Achan was identified. Yet he did not confess until he was pinpointed.

Achan’s transgression was threefold:

First, it was covetousness. He said, “I saw… I coveted them.” (Joshua 7:21).

Second, it was theft. He took what did not belong to him, what God had forbidden.

The third was lying. When inquiries were made, he remained silent and concealed the truth until he was exposed.

Eventually, judgment came. Achan, his family, and all that belonged to him were brought to the Valley of Achor, where death and destruction overtook them (Joshua 7:24–26).

Now, the most tragic part was that Achan did not merely return what he stole; he lost everything he had, including his own life and his wife and children. What was not his came to take away what was already his.

Beloved, what is not yours does not add anything to you; it takes everything from you. Scripture declares that he who gets riches not by right shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool (Jeremiah 17:11).

If you want a future that is guaranteed and a life that is preserved, avoid the plague of covetousness, theft, and stealing. There is a curse that follows the thief to cut him off (Zechariah 5:3–4). Negative character may produce temporary gains, but it always leads to a permanent loss.

REMEMBER THIS: What is not yours does not add anything to you; it takes everything from you.

ASSIGNMENT(S):

Reject every form of covetousness and unhealthy desire for what belongs to others.
Maintain integrity in your dealings and refuse every form of theft.
Speak the truth always and avoid every appearance of falsehood.

Father, thank You for Your Word to me today. Help me to walk in integrity and preserve my destiny through positive character, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.
