Devotional
DCLM Daily Manna 2 November 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
TOPIC: Vessels God Uses.
KEY VERSE: “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work” (2 Timothy 2:20,21).
TEXT: 2 Timothy 2:19-22 (KJV)
19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.
22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Today’s MESSAGE:
Robert Murray M’Cheyne, a minister in the Church of Scotland from 1835 to 1843, wrote to Dan Edwards, after the latter’s ordination as a missionary, “In great measure, according to the purity and perfections of the instrument, will be the success. It is not great talents God blesses so much as great likeness to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God”.
In today’s passage, Apostle Paul writes to Timothy, stressing the importance of being a vessel God can use. He starts by reminding Timothy that God’s foundation is solid and that those who belong to God can be recognised by their lives of purity and dedication. Paul uses the metaphor of vessels to illustrate the different types of people in God’s great house. Some are vessels of honour, cleansed and set apart for noble purposes. In contrast, others are vessels of dishonour, unfit for God’s work. The difference between these vessels isn’t about their inherent value but their willingness to be purified and dedicated for God’s use. This analogy emphasises the need for personal purity.
Just as a vessel must be clean to fulfil its purpose, believers must rid themselves of impurities—sinful behaviours, harmful attitudes, or corrupting influences. Doing so makes them valuable to the Master, ready to embrace their divine calling. To become vessels of honour, purified and ready for God’s purposes, believers must abstain from false teachers and corrupting influences, flee youthful desires, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace alongside those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.Explore Faiths
The metaphor of fleeing suggests urgency and deliberate effort, while the pursuit of righteousness, faith, love, and peace calls for sustained commitment and perseverance.
As we reflect on today’s text, let everyone ask: what kind of vessel am I? Am I a vessel of honour, purified and set apart for noble purposes, or am I a vessel of dishonour, prideful, polluted, and unfit for God’s use? Let us recommit our lives to God, pursuing righteousness, faith, love, and peace to become vessels worthy of God’s use.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
No vessel is unto honour that is not consecrated.
