TOPIC – The Cost Of Disobedience (1)
READ: 1 Kings 11:9-13
9 And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,
10 And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the Lord commanded.
11 Wherefore the Lord said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.
13 Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.
THE MESSAGE:
Though the LORD, the God of Israel, had appeared to Solomon twice and had commanded him not to worship foreign gods, Solomon did not obey the LORD but turned away from Him. So, Solomon knew the will of the LORD but chose not to obey (vv. 9-10). When we deliberately and clearly disobey the command and instructions of God, we set ourselves for His fearful judgement (Hebrews 10:26). In this case, the LORD pronounced His judgement on Solomon saying, “Because you have deliberately broken your covenant with Me and disobeyed my commands, I will take the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your officials” (v. 11). However, for the sake of David, God said He would not do it in Solomon’s lifetime, but in the reign of his son.
In contrast, David had secured an eternal blessing upon his generation that even Solomon was a partaker of. What David secured by his obedient walk with God, Solomon lost by his disobedience to God. This clearly teaches us that a man’s walk with God, whether it be in obedience or disobedience, will not only affect him, but also the coming generation. David left a blessing; Solomon left behind a judgement. The question we must all quickly answer is: What legacy am I leaving behind for the coming generation, a legacy of obedience to God or a legacy of disobedience to God? Disobedience to God is a very costly venture, don’t attempt into it.
PRAYER: Lord, keep me away from disobeying your commands.
